The Sarasota Red Sox, a Single A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, play in Ed Smith Stadium, seating 8,500. Ed Smith was recognized for his service to sports and youth of Sarasota. The stadium was built in 1989 and has a seating capacity of 7,500. Probably about 1,000 in attendance and this with every seat being free. As a promotion Yellow Pages bought out the park. This stadium is used by Cincinnati for spring training. Sarasota was playing the Vero Beach Dodgers and were successful winning 5-3. The box score was Dodgers R-3, H-8, E-4 and Red Sox R-5, H-9, E-1. We enjoyed talking with some locals from the Port Charlotte area and learning some interesting stories about Ranger players, who until last year had spring training in Port Charlotte.
