The Greensboro Bats, a Single A affiliate of Florida, play in War Memorial Stadium. This stadium was built in 1926 and is the oldest full season minor league stadium still in use. War Memorial Stadium was dedicated as a living memorial to the 128 Guilford County men who died in WW I. The stadium for its age is in pretty good condition. The seats have been changed at some time and there is a lot of room for legs between each row. There is a Grandstand outdoor sports bar down the third base line and the left field corner. There is a tunnel under the stands that has concessions and one set of restrooms. The Bats were playing the Asheville Tourists. The game was tied at 4-4 at the end of nine innings and went into the tenth. In the bottom of the tenth a Bat player hit one over the left field 3 level advertising signs with another Bat on base and the game was over--Bats-6 and Tourists-4. The box score was Tourists R-4, H-9, E-1 and Bats R-6, H-12, E-0. The field lines are RF-327', RC-356', CF-401', LC-370', And LF-327'. The stadium seats 7,500 and if I heard the announcer correctly there were 2,399 in attendance tonight. The announcer was outside of the announcing booth for the whole game. There has been a new announcing/radio booth set up just to the left of home plate behind the seating. The original booth in the back center of the covered seating is not used. The food selection is limited to standard baseball fare. The eleven rows of reserved seats are between the bases. The general admission bleachers, no back, are behind the reserved seats and two sections down the first base line and at least four sections down the third base line before you get the outdoor sports bar. The Bats are owned by a group of 68 people. Casey the Bat is one mascot and he plays the trumpet for "Charge" and to give the opposing manager the raspberry if required. Missy the Mosquito is the other mascot, and is new this year. The one picture is blurred, but one of the inning break contests is to try to throw a toilet plunger into a toilet. Tonight's contestants were unsuccessful. There is a black lab dog named Batman who takes baseballs out to the umpire between innings. Tonight was Wet Wednesday and beer was $1. You can buy your souvenirs in the Bats Belfry. Smoking is allowed except in one section just left of home. Now known as the Greensboro Grasshoppers. New Logo 2005.
