| On August 22, 1804, the Corps discovered elk signs everywhere, which Clark noted in his journal. The first election west of the Mississippi River occured when the expedition camped near Elk Point, SD. With the death of Sgt. Floyd a new Sgt. needed to be elected. Clark "ordered a vote to chose one of three. William Bratton, Patrick Gass and George Gibson each received votes from fellow members of the Corps, but Gass received the most votes with 19 and was appointed. | ||||||||
