Crimson Bluffs & Yorks Islands
Townsend, MT
On July 24, 1805 Lewis wrote "passed a remarkable bluff of crimson coloured earth on starboard intermixed with stratas of black and brick red slate. Sgt. Gass wrote "The morning was fine, and we early prosecuted our voyage; passed a bank of very red earth, which our squaw told us the natives use for paint."

On the same date as they traveled a few miles further upstream they saw many beaver and traveled through 8 islands that Clark later penned on his map "Yorks 8 islands".

Row 1--Crimson Bluffs, Row 2--#1-up river from bluffs, #2-Row 3--#3-Yorks islands.
