| Meriwether Lewis stood on the Contenental Divide, poised between the United States and the Territory of Spain; rugged mountains shattered his hopes of an easy portage to the Columbia River watershed. West of Lemhi Pass, Lewis met the Shoshone and they rejoined Clark with horses critical to their journey. The word "Lemhi" derives from the Mormon Fort Limhi founded west of the Divide in 1855.
