||||||||||||
| Destination: The Pacific was one of the Signature Events scheduled for the Bicenntenial of the Corps of Discovery. It took place in Astoria, OR, Illwaco and Long Beach, WA.
The "Ocian in View" Speaker Series was outstanding. We attended four of them. Sacagawea, York and The Vote at Station Camp: Delusions of Democracy? York was portrayed in an outstanding manner by Hasan Davis. Amy Mosset, a Mandan-Hidatsa Tribal member spoke about Sacagawea and what the vote meant. Rex Ziak told about Fur Trade, Soft Gold, Lewis & Clark. The Soft Gold was the sea otter skin that made fortunes for many east coast Americans in the late 1700s. He told how Americans traded with the NW coastal Indians for the furs, took the furs to China and traded for tea, silk, spices which they then took back to east coast America. He told how little was known of the western part of America at the time of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. He used sticky notes in an interesting way to show the routes on the hugh maps he had. The third that we listened to was Exploration Then and Now: Conversation with Captain William Clark and Former Astronaut Bonnie Dunbar. Bud Clark, the great, great, great grandson of William Clark portrayed him and spoke about reaching the Pacific. Bonnie Dunbar spoke of the similarities of reaching the Pacific and landing on the moon. Last was Hollywood vs History with a panel consisting of Amy Mossett, Rod Airiwite of the Lemhi/Shoshone Tribe, Donna Kessler Barbie author of The Making of Sacagawea, and Robert Carriker, Professor of History at Gonzaga University. They investigated into the myths and legends surrounding Sacagawea and explored why Americans and the world regard her with such respect and renown. Row 1--#1-Hasan Davis as York, #2-Amy Mosset, #3 & 4--Rex Ziak. Row 2--#1-Bud Clark, #2-Bonnie Dunbar, #3 & 4-Clark and Dunbar. |
