The Blackwell, Oklahoma FlyCatchers, is a member of the independent Pecos League. They play at Morgan Field next to the county fairgrounds.Morgan Field was once home to Blackwell's own team, which was an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Blackwell regained its stake in minor-league baseball when the Carthage Cubs relocated to America's Hometown in the early 1950s, becoming the Blackwell Broncos. The Blackwell Broncos, played as members of the Oklahoma State League, the Southwestern League, Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri League and, finally, the Western Association. The Broncos won the final championship of the Western Association. When we arrived at the field, we started talking with the father of one of the Kansas City Iola team players. He told us that the game had been delayed until 7:30pm because of the field conditions. He took our picture standing by the banner. We were able to go into the stadium and Jim took pictures. The previous night and early morning it had rained very hard. One fan said she had 1_ inches of rain at her house in town. Apparently the homeplate area was not covered sufficiently during the storms. The dirt was very slippery and not a safe place to play. At 7:30pm the game was called. Counting this game they had five rainouts. This area had been in drought conditions, so the local farmers were happy to have the rain. The FlyCatchers were supposed to play the Kansas City Iola Hormingas. The field lines are RF-310', CF-340', LF-311'. Halo is the mascot dog of the FlyCatchers. |
